ELIZABETH TORRES
Elizabeth Torres is a poet and essayist in southern Minnesota with work in AGNI, Ecotone, Ninth Letter, Tin House, and elsewhere. Her writing has been supported by the Loft Literary Center, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, and elsewhere.
Mother, there were never any children in the garden. Mother, the first sons killed each other over jealousy. The first daughters aren’t even mentioned.
We can choose to build a memory bank that foregrounds joy and possibility, and that doesn’t have to mean naivety or turning away from the problems of our time so much as creating strength and conviction.
